Background of the study
Hashtagbased language change has emerged as a dynamic force in Nigerian digital discourse, particularly on Twitter. Hashtags, originally designed as content categorization tools, now catalyze the creation of new lexical items and reconfigure meaning through rapid dissemination (Akinyele, 2023). Nigerian Twitter movements often harness hashtags to mobilize social and political action, simultaneously driving linguistic innovation. Users creatively adapt hashtags into neologisms, abbreviations, and hybrid expressions that encapsulate complex ideas in a succinct form. This study compares various Twitter movements to identify the linguistic transformations induced by hashtag use. It explores how these digital markers reshape grammar, semantics, and word formation processes, reflecting broader cultural shifts and digital activism in Nigeria (Ibrahim, 2024).

Statement of the problem
Although hashtagbased language change is a notable phenomenon on Nigerian Twitter, systematic comparative studies are rare. Existing research frequently focuses on the social impact of hashtags rather than their linguistic consequences. This gap prevents a thorough understanding of how hashtag movements drive lexical innovation and language change. The study aims to address this deficiency by comparing hashtagbased language changes across multiple Twitter movements, thereby illuminating their broader implications for digital discourse (Chukwu, 2024).

Objectives of the study

  1. To examine hashtagbased language changes in Nigerian Twitter movements.
  2. To compare linguistic innovations across different hashtag campaigns.
  3. To assess the impact of these changes on digital language use.

Research questions

  1. How do hashtag movements influence language change on Twitter?
  2. What new lexical forms emerge from these movements?
  3. What is the broader impact of hashtagbased innovations on Nigerian digital discourse?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it reveals the transformative effect of hashtag movements on digital language, providing key insights into contemporary lexical innovation in Nigeria (Akinyele, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study
The study is confined to Twitter and focuses on hashtagbased language change in Nigerian digital discourse, excluding other platforms or offline language.

Definitions of terms

  • Hashtag: A word or phrase preceded by “#” used to categorize and promote digital content.
  • Language Change: The evolution of language over time.
